This follows on from [livejournal.com profile] bossymarmalade and [livejournal.com profile] gyzym's posts yesterday, with awesome music by awesome women. I felt moved to do the same today. THIS TOOK FOREVER. But I'm glad I did it!

These are in no particular order - just a selection of 50 songs and/or voices I like hearing. :)

Over and Over - Madonna

You try to criticize my drive
If I lose I don't feel paralyzed
It's not the game it's how you play
And if I fall I get up again now

Why isn't this song played to every girl as soon as she's born? It should be issued with those name bracelets at the hospital.

Dimestore Diamond - Gossip

You can call her broke, you can call her poor
But everybody knows that she ain't cold no more
She's a dimestore diamond

God, I just love Beth Ditto. ♥

Williams Blood (Aeroplane Remix) - Grace Jones

According to wiki, this song is about her allegiances with her hard-drinking womanizing musician grandfather, the Williams of the title. Go Grace go! This remix is also EPIC.

I've got the Williams blood in me

If I Had A Heart (Familjen remix) - Fever Ray

The album from which this song comes was written by Karin Dreijer Andersson, half of The Knife, in the aftermath of the birth of her first child. The whole thing is really dreamy and weird, sounding like it was written by a sleep deprived person in the middle of the night.

This will never end
Cause I want more
More, give me more, give me more

Je m'en fous pas mal - Edith Piaf

I just adore Edith. Like so many women back in the day, she had a hell of a time in showbiz. This is one of her most kickass songs. ♥ Edith.

I really couldn't care less
Anything might happen to me
I really couldn't care less
i have my Sundays which are [all] mine
It might be a cliché
But what other people think of you
It makes no difference to me!

Girls Just Want To Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper

This is an obvious choice, but here it is anyway. Originally written by a dude, for a dude to sing, Cyndi genderswapped it. Hell yeah girl!anthem!

Some boys take a beautiful girl
And hide her away from the rest of the world
I want to be the one to walk in the sun
Oh girls they want to have fun

Makin' Whoopee - Doris Day

I liked the slightly subversive twist in this one. Plus Doris has a phenom voice.

Weddings make a lot of people sad
But if you're not the one, they're not so bad!
He's washing dishes, and baby clothes
He's so ambitious, he even sews

Heart So Hollow - Die So Fluid

I'm a sucker for a distorted guitar and her voice is great. :)

Tarot cards and self improvement books,
horoscopes and the suffrage movement.
You’re equipped but you don’t use it
Did this path choose you or you choose it?
Use it
Choose it
Abuse it
Lose it

Hound Dog - Big Mama Thornton

So much more awesome than Elvis's version. Also predates his.

You ain't nothing but a hound dog
Been snoopin' round my door
You can wag your tail
But I ain't gonna feed you no more

Iowa (Travelling III) - Dar Williams

This is just a beautiful song. It makes my throat hurt.

For tonight I went running through the screen doors of discretion,
For I woke up from a nightmare that I could not stand to see,
You were a-wandering out on the hills of Iowa and you were not thinking of me.

Alibi - Dessa

This woman is SO GREAT. I love her voice, her lyrics... all her songs are great. This one is about friendship, though, and I particularly approve for the theme of this collection.

I don't know if he did it and I won't ask
there's a lot of good women with a lot of bad backs
your man's in something heavy, it already looks bad
careful what you carry on his behalf

Heart You Hold - Bridezilla

I can't find any lyrics online, which is kind of frustrating, but I want to include this band, who have a violinist and a saxophonist, and the only band member who isn't a lady is the drummer. I saw them last year at Great Escape, and was so overwhelmed by them I went and sat down on the beach outside afterwards and cried.

Heart of Glass - Blondie

Not particularly lyrically empowering, but a great tune and should def be part of any badass lady-canon. The lyrics aren't so much the point, to my ear, anyway.

Human Behaviour - Bjork

Bjork is just SO GREAT, YOU GUYS.

They're terribly moody
And human behaviour
Then all of a sudden turn happy
But, oh, to get involved in the exchange
Of human emotions is ever so, ever so satisfying

Lover I Don't Have To Love - Bettie Serveert

I think I got this for one of my big bang mixes. I fucking love this version, she is such a powerful singer, and this song is just so fucking EPIC.

White Noise - Babadub

Her voice is fantastic and this track is just so viscerally moving.

All I have to do is be
All I have to do is see
I will sing the white noise
I will fill the dark void

Not a Pretty Girl - Ani DiFranco

As if I could leave Ani off.

I am not a pretty girl
That is not what I do
I ain't no damsel in distess
And I don't need to be rescued
So put me down punk
Maybe you'd prefer a maiden fair
Isn't there a kitten stuck up a tree somewhere?

If It Feels Right (Do It) - Aimee Allen

This was never released as an album, and it makes me so sad. Great GREAT song and great voice.

If it feels right (if it feels right then just do it, do it)
(if it feels right then just do it)

Rolling in the Deep - Adele

It's pretty much impossible not to be aware of Adele, with her non-showbiz standard shape, and her FANTASTIC voice. I've included it here as pure self-indulgence. :)

Throw your soul through every open door,
Count your blessings to find what you look for,
Turn my sorrow into treasured gold,
You'll pay me back in kind and reap just what you've sown

I Love Rock 'n Roll - Joan Jett

What else to be said here but \m/ \m/.

Everybody Knows (Leonard Cohen cover) - Elizabeth & The Catapult

I just adore this cover. :)

Jolene - Dolly Parton

Talk about important women in music oh my god. I'm not a country fan but you got to respect this level of industry chops. ♥

Grindin' & shakin' - Yo Majesty

Folks, this here is lesbian rap. YEAH.

Grindin' and shakin'
Ain't nothin' wrong with it

Turn Into - Yeah Yeah Yeahs

I love this album an unholy amount. Oh Karen. ♥

That girl you found
Keeps that kind of window closed
She'll turn into
The only thing you ever--
turn into
Hope I do
Turn into you

Electric Twist - A Fine Frenzy

Made the list cos it's catchy and I like it? :)?

Night - Zola Jesus

Same deal as above. Great voice!

Seether - Veruca Salt

One of those great bands of the 90s no one talks about anymore. Why can't we CANONIZE THE LADIES, OMG?!

Keep her down, boiling water,
Keep her down, what a lovely daughter.
Oh, she is not born like other girls,
But I know how to conceive her.

Cum on Baby - The Trashwomen

I don't even remember how I found this band, but they are punk surf rock? I don't even know, it's GREAT.

Hell - Tegan & Sara

My favourite lesbian twins musical duo? No, really. ;)

Riot - The Sounds

Oh my god gorgeous Scandinavian lesbian HAI.

Right or wrong, it's just for fun
And who really cares, we could have a ball

Words And Guitar - Sleater-Kinney

A line from this song is engraved on the back of my ipod.

Can't take this away from me
Music is the air I breathe

'Venus Shaver'- Shilpa Ray and her Happy Hookers

Yes, really about the razor. Fantastic song, f'reals.

No One's Little Girl - The Raincoats

Another band incomprehensibly excluded from the punk canon, except for oh hey. Girls. Right, of course.

I'm no one's little girl, oh no, I'm not,
I'm not gonna be - cause I don't wanna be in your family tree
Even if you ask me to - I'm gonna turn you down.
I won't mess you around.

Rid of Me - PJ Harvey

Live in Australia, ripped from the video. It's so visceral live, it makes my hands clench.

Lick my legs, I'm on fire
Lick my legs of desire

Rockabilly - Peggy Sue And The Pirates

Two ladies, one guitar, recorded in a living room. I just love it. They're now just known as Peggy Sue, I believe.

AAXXX - Peaches

I unapologetically love Peaches.

Licky Licky, Sucky Sucky
Nobody who can tell me they don't wanna
Fucky Fucky

Sparrow - Olenka & The Autumn Lovers

This is just PRETTY. ♥___♥

Make It Gold - Ohbijou

Bring back wickedness
Bring back temperaments
Bring back the wind that blew the fire into
The woods where I wait for you

Ditto as above, and Canadian too. :)

John Saw That Number - Neko Case

This woman can SING. And it's LOVELY.

These Boots Are Made For Walkin' - Nancy Sinatra

Hahaha how could I NOT. :D

WooHoo - Misnomer(S)

Korean-American sisters who rap. Fuck yeah.

Hope in the Air - Laura Marling

Her songs are so gorgeous, I couldn't leave her off.

I can't give up that quick
My life is a candle and a wick
You can put it out, but you can't break it down
In the end we are waiting to be lit

Teeth - Lady GaGa

I literally wanted to put something with BITE on this list.

Slide - L7

Another band who really ought to be mentioned more often than they are. So fucking great.

You put your cane into my amp - lettin' you slide
When it comes to losers, you're the champ - lettin' you slide
From my garden I pull your weed - lettin' you slide
Your stupid ego I will not feed - no

Jesus Was A Cross Maker - Judee Sill

A contemporary of Joni Mitchell and that whole west coast scene, Judee never got the attention of all her peers. This song is just gorgeous tho. Listen and try to enjoy even tho she got fucked over by a bunch of dicks.

Do It Like a Dude - Jessie J

I fucking LOVE this song, even as I have mixed feelings about it. If you like it too, DEFINITELY go find the video. HOTTTT.

Dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty sucka
You think I can't get hurt like you, you motherfucker

I can do it like a brother
Do it like a dude
Grab my crotch, wear my hat low like you

Tulip - Jesca Hoop

I just love this song. It's so beautiful, her voice, the arrangement. ♥

Ta Douleur - Camille

French song off an album that really works best as a complete entity. I don't think knowing the French is critical to finding this song fun, and it does mostly work on its own. :)

Slow Like Honey - Fiona Apple

I could live in this song, wrap myself up in it and... yeah. Gorgeous.

Gonna keep you reaching
When I'm gone like yesterday
When I'm high like heaven
When I'm strong like music

Ball and Chain - Janis Joplin

This song. THIS SONG. It hurts, it digs in, with this overwhelming desperation that gives me shivers so hard I have to stop everything when I listen to it. Un-fucking-believable song. ;___;
