Just for a change of pace--and to quietly ignore the lj drama of the last couple of days--I have a bit of a different ax to grind. Yay Thursday, right.

So, apparently at the recent MCR Seattle show, Gerard told people (the crowd?) that he's engaged. Ostensibly, this is to Eliza, who has been previously known to fandom as his girlfriend. Go him, congratulations, etc. I mean that sincerely, too. If he's happy, go him. ♥

What I really don't like--and I've seen FAR TOO MUCH of this--is the hating on the girlfriends by fans (both in and out of fandom). Last night, I found an account of the Seattle show, written up by a fan of the band and of Eliza herself. I don't know much about Eliza--I think she does hair?--but that's irrelevant to this discussion. Here is an excerpt of what she said--*

But Gerard did recognize me as the girl Eliza put on the list, and immediately (and very seriously, with a funny frown on his face) thanked me for being so kind to her, which I thought was kinda funny and sad at the same time. It just reaffirmed the fact that she gets a lot of undeserved crap these days which is a shame, but I'm glad we were able to meet her and remind her that there are a lot of people who love her out there.

Now, this immediately put me in a state of irate flail, though I couldn't immediately articulate why. It wasn't until I had a discussion about this with one of my BFFs that I could put a finger on it. Said BFF pointed out "why would you take pleasure, as a fan, in being horrible about someone your hero/idol/wet dream loved? It is bound to hurt him."

And that's the thing. How is it okay, in the minds of the fans who do spend time badmouthing (and in some cases, even issuing death threats) the loved ones of the boys we purport to care about? It hurts them, you idiots.

Right, rant over. Now for some tea. Feel free to chime in, though. Especially if you agree with me. :)
